We understand that feeling safe in your own home goes beyond just locking the doors. True security means knowing that your personal life remains private. Recently, concerns about big tech companies and data collection have made many homeowners question the safety of popular DIY security cameras. At Custom Security Systems, we believe your security footage belongs to you, and only you. Building a private home security system isn’t just about keeping intruders out. It’s about keeping your personal data in.
Is Your Data Privacy at Risk?
You might have seen us on the news recently. WAFB featured Custom Security Systems in a report about data privacy and home security cameras. The report highlighted a worrying trend: some major tech companies may access video footage from devices even when users think they are offline.
This is a scary thought for anyone who values their privacy. When you install a camera inside your home, you expect it to protect you, not spy on you. Unfortunately, the business model for many large DIY brands relies on gathering user data.
What We Had to Say
Corey Spano, one of our sales consultants, spoke to WAFB about this issue. He explained the reality of these mass-market products.
“All these DIY systems, you buy them from these big conglomerates, and you’re getting this kind of stuff where they don’t really care. They want your data, and that’s all they want,” said Spano.
This practice is becoming more common as companies look for new ways to profit. Spano noted that this behavior does not surprise him, given how data collection companies operate.
“It seemed odd at first, but then I thought, you know, they can collect data. That’s all they do. These big manufacturers, big companies that collect data. That’s how they make their money. And server space is pretty cheap nowadays. So if they’re collecting some video every once in a while from these cameras, that’s probably not costing them anything to keep it on their servers,” Spano said.
We take a different approach. Our goal is to provide a safe home security system that serves your needs, not an algorithm.
Building a Private Home Security System
So, how do you ensure your security measures do not compromise your privacy? The answer lies in choosing the right equipment and the right partner. We use technology that doesn’t sell data to third parties. When you work with a local provider like Custom Security Systems, you are not just a user ID in a massive database. You are a neighbor.
We prioritize systems that give you ownership of your recordings. Whether you use local storage or secure Cloud options, we ensure that you control who sees your video. You should never have to worry about a stranger accessing your living room feed.
New Features for Enhanced Privacy and Awareness
We are constantly updating our technology to offer better protection. Our partner, Alarm.com, recently released a new feature that adds another layer of security to your private home security system.
Many modern cameras use SD cards for onboard recording. This is a great feature for continuous recording, but it can be vulnerable if someone physically tampers with the camera. The new SD Card Tamper Protection with Automatic Video Capture solves this problem.
How It Works
Previously, if someone removed an SD card (whether it was a thief trying to hide evidence or just an accident), you might not know why the recording stopped. Now, the system is smarter.
If an SD card is removed from a supported camera, the device immediately captures a video clip and sends you an alert, so you’ll know instantly if someone tampers with your equipment. The system labels this clip as an “SD card removal event” in your saved videos. Even if someone swipes the card, they won’t be able to view anything on it because all footage goes through the alarm.com servers for your protection. This feature is available on a wide range of security cameras.
This update ensures that even if a criminal tries to disable your local storage, the camera will still catch them in the act and notify you.
Tips for a More Private Home Security System
You deserve to feel confident in your security choices. Here are a few ways to ensure your system respects your privacy.
1. Choose Professional Installation
DIY cameras often rely on public Cloud servers with vague terms of service. Our professional installers can set up a local storage solution or a secure Cloud partition that only you access. This keeps your footage away from the prying eyes of big tech algorithms.
2. Choose Local Alarm Monitoring
You don’t want a global corporation handling your home security. Locally monitored alarm systems provide a direct line to responders in your community, ensuring a faster, more personal reaction when every second counts.
3. Secure Your Network
Even the best cameras need a secure internet connection.
- Change your router’s default password.
- Use strong, unique passwords for your security apps.
- Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.
Spano noted in his interview that “anything that’s on the internet has a chance to be hacked.” While this is true, taking these proactive steps makes you a much harder target.
