Learning How to Maintain Your Alarm System

As spring is approaching, we’re all considering some deep cleaning or home projects. But how often do you maintain your alarm system? Without proper care, you could be risking your family’s safety in the event of a break-in or fire. Our alarm business has some great tips on how to properly maintain and clean your alarm system to ensure your home is safe and secure. At Custom Security Systems, we care about your security and we’re here to help.

Remember to Test Your Equipment

Technology can work perfectly upon installation, but if landline, cellular, or other communication-based work has been made at or near your home, we suggest our customers test their alarm system every now and then to ensure it’s working properly.

One of the best ways to do this is by testing your system with our monitoring station to ensure we receive the signal. If we don’t receive this signal in the event of an emergency, we won’t be able to provide effective assistance. Continuing, you should also test to ensure that the systems on your doors and windows are also working properly.

If your landline was recently removed, it’s important to make sure your alarm system is still working properly. This can be problematic if we set up your system beforehand, because if we connected your system through your landline, we cannot receive your signal or check up on you. If your landline has been recently removed, let us know and we can help update your system with a cellular communicator. If you think your system might be disconnected, give us a call at any time and we’ll gladly walk you through it.

Cleaning Isn’t Just for Spring

In addition to ensuring that your systems are working properly, we also encourage you to clean the exterior of your system. Your touchscreen keypad has a specific mode for when you want to clean. So before you begin, make sure that you put your system in “Clean Mode.” Doing this prevents any accidental button pushing that might set off your alarm. We also have helpful guides available so you can clean your keypad properly.

It’s also important to wipe down and clean any “high-touch” devices in your care. These include not only your keypad but also keyfobs, thermostats, and door locks. The go-to way to clean these items is with an antibacterial-wipe and then dry them with a soft cloth. Remember to avoid direct spraying or using rough paper towels on devices as well to prevent hard spots and damage.

With the right maintenance, you could extend the life and appearance of your security system.

Keeping Up to Date

Lastly, it’s important for us to stay up to date with our call list. We have numerous customers who have disconnected landlines, changes in living arrangements, still have pager numbers, and more. If this information is not up to date, it can be difficult for us to help when we’re needed. If you need help updating your contact list, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.
